From SIM Cards to Smart Business Lines

Monetizing Africa's Mobile-First SMEs

Recorded 1 October 2026Yaron Assabi (DSG), Karl Osswald (Telavox), Viktor Karlsson (Telavox)

Most small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Africa already run their business from a mobile phone, using the SIM (subscriber identity module, the card that connects a phone to the mobile network) and number they already have.

This webinar, hosted by DSG in partnership with Telavox, shows mobile network and mobile virtual network operators how to turn that existing mobile line into a proper business line, without first having to build the fixed-line infrastructure that European operators needed.

The core idea: because that legacy layer was never built in most African markets, there is nothing to drag along, so operators can go straight to a business line that lives on the mobile network itself, using Telavox's platform.

What This Webinar Covers

The starting point: mobile-first SMEs, with no fixed-line legacy to drag along

For most African SMEs, the mobile phone is not a backup system. It is the business: the sales line, the customer line, the supplier line, often the only communications infrastructure the business has. Operators currently sell these businesses voice and data, and stop there.

In Europe, turning an ordinary mobile line into a real business line meant dragging legacy fixed-line networks into the picture, because that is where business telephony history and infrastructure already lived.

In most African markets, that fixed-line layer was never built. There is nothing legacy to migrate, integrate with or work around. That gap is the opening this webinar focuses on: operators can go straight to a business line that lives on the mobile network, using Telavox's platform, instead of retrofitting old infrastructure first.

Key Takeaways

What you will learn

  • African SMEs already run their business on a mobile phone and a mobile number. Operators do not need to create a new market, they need to upgrade the relationship they already have.
  • Europe had to drag legacy fixed-line infrastructure into business telephony. Most African markets never built that layer, so operators can skip straight to a mobile-network business line.
  • Telavox's platform lets operators offer that business line directly on the mobile network, under the operator's own brand.
  • The webinar covers the practical side of rollout: how the DSG-Telavox model is structured, and what re-monetising an SME base has looked like based on Nordic experience.
  • WhatsApp Business and other OTT apps face the same missing-fixed-line-legacy gap operators do, so the advantage is not automatic for either side.
  • What an operator owns and an app cannot replicate: the SIM, the number, the billing relationship, resilient call quality, and a trusted local licence.
  • Telavox builds business communication features into the operator's network itself, rather than sitting above it as a separate app.

Who Should Watch

  • Mobile network operator (MNO) strategy, product and commercial leaders evaluating new revenue from their existing SME base.
  • MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) and MVNE (mobile virtual network enabler) leaders looking to differentiate beyond price and data bundles.
  • Telecoms commercial and product teams responsible for SME segment growth and retention.
  • Anyone assessing how to compete with OTT (over-the-top) business messaging tools like WhatsApp Business from inside the network, rather than around it.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How can African mobile operators monetise their SME base?+

By upgrading the mobile line an SME (small and medium enterprise) already uses into a business line, with features like call handling and business communications layered onto the existing SIM, number and billing relationship, rather than selling the SME a brand-new product from scratch.

What is a smart business line, and how is it different from ordinary voice and data?+

Ordinary voice and data treats the SME's mobile line as a consumer line. A business line adds the features a business actually needs on top of that same line, such as professional call handling, using Telavox's platform built into the operator's own network.

Why can African operators skip the fixed-line step that Europe could not?+

In Europe, business telephony grew up on fixed-line networks, so bringing mobile lines into business use meant integrating with that existing legacy infrastructure. Most African markets never built that fixed-line layer, so there is nothing to drag along. Operators can offer a business line directly on the mobile network instead.

Can WhatsApp Business or other OTT apps replace an operator's business line?+

They can offer some of the same convenience, but they cannot replicate what the operator owns: the SIM, the number, the billing relationship, call quality that holds up when the network does not, and a licence and local presence business customers trust. OTT (over-the-top) apps sit above the network. Telavox's platform is built into it.

How long does a DSG-Telavox rollout take, and what results can an operator expect?+

The webinar covers rollout timelines and what re-monetising an SME base has looked like based on Nordic experience with Telavox's platform.

What do DSG and Telavox each bring to this partnership?+

Telavox supplies the platform that puts business communication features onto the operator's mobile network. DSG's role is regional enablement for African markets: the infrastructure, billing, managed operations and local support that let an operator launch and run it.

About the Partners

DSG (Digital Solutions Group)

Supports mobile operators across African markets with regional enablement: infrastructure, billing, managed operations and local, on-the-ground support for launching new services.

Telavox

Builds the platform behind the business line described in this webinar: business communications and call handling built into an operator's own mobile network, rather than a separate app layered on top.
